What do you do with that hard section on the side of the house? The Side Yard Landscape Design can help you solve that part of the yard that gets some sunshine part of the day and then it is in shade the rest of the day. You want some plants that will bring out beauty and fragrance, but you don't want to spend a lot of time on the side of the house. This landscape design will be perfect for this portion of your yard.

Three Wonderful Perennials that Don't Require a Lot of Care

I have selected 3 wonderful perennials that don't require a lot of care. You only need to water during extremely dry weather. They all do well in partial sunshine. The flowers will bloom and add interest during different times of the year. The Bearded Iris is the first to bloom every year. It comes out cold hard ground when there is still a chance of frost in the air.

Now you will go a month or two with just green plants growing. The Iris will stop blooming and you are waiting for the Butterfly Bushes to shoot out their fragrant bouquet of flowers. You will see butterflies milking the nectar from the long pyramidal shaped flowers.

Though the dog days of summer seem to never end; eventually the days grow shorter and the Asters begin their show. The Asters and the Butterfly bushes will compete for your attention as summer turns to fall. But, you won't mind as you enjoy the late summer rush for beauty.

Landscape Design Covers Foundation on the Side Yard

If you want to hide a section of your house from the neighbors or maybe want to enhance a side fence, this landscape design will thrill you from spring through fall. The Butterfly bush can be trimmed in early spring. The Asters are easy care and the Bearded Iris can be split and given to friends every 5 years or so.

For this side yard landscape design I recommend the following perennials.

Use These Perennials

The Butterfly Bush is a hardy perennial that flowers during the summer and lasts in your garden until late in the season. Your garden will attract butterflies with the butterfly bush. A perfect bush for the side of the house landscape design.
You can plant two Butterfly Bushes. The Butterfly Bush is a hardy perennial that flowers during the summer and lasts in your garden until late in the season. Your garden will attract butterflies with the butterfly bush. The first year it gets its roots but by the second year it is putting out beautiful clumps of flowers. This sunny shrub has flowers that attract butterflies.

Each clump of flowers grows 6 to 8 inches long, with tiny perfect little flowers. Produces a nice fragrance and is also known as the Summer Lilac. The leaves of a butterfly bush are a different shade of green, some call it blue green, and will offer a nice offset color to the rest of the garden.

The bearded iris comes in a variety of colors and will enhance any landscape design.
Next, you should plant two clumps of Bearded Iris. The Bearded Iris is a spring bloomer, that grows up to four feet tall with a spread of as much as two feet. Though the iris blooms in early spring like bulb plants, most grow from rhizome systems. There are some that grow from bulbs. You can get a wide variety of colors: blue, violet, yellow, purple, red, white and pink. Each clump can contain up to 3 plants.
A photo of an Aster helps bring out the late summer beauty of the Side Yard Landscape Design.
The Aster is a prolific late summer bloomer showing its flowers at a time when other plants and flowers are going to seed.
Next, you should plant two clumps of Asters. The Aster is a prolific late summer bloomer showing its flowers at a time when other plants and flowers are going to seed. There are many different varieties of this native North American perennial. Asters require minimal care. Keep them watered with an inch of water each week. If you want to produce more flowers in September you can pinch the top of the plant in July. There are tall varieties that will flop over and you may want to stake them.

This landscape design for side yards requires a space 20 feet long by 6 feet deep. Plant the 2 Butterfly bushes on either corner to work as anchors. Then place the Aster in the middle of the plot. Then the Iris can go between the Aster and each Butterfly Bush. Remember, the Asters will fill in over a couple of years. This space will look sparse the first 2 years. The Iris will spread to fill the space but not quickly. Use annuals until you feel the Iris and Asters have met the space needs.

Side Yard Landscape Design

I am titling this as a side yard or side of the house landscape design. But, really you can place this design anywhere you think it will work in your yard. You know your yard better than anybody. Where would you like to see these wonderful colors? I have my butterfly bushes on the side of my house because they are in front of some windows in my family room. As I am watching college football in the fall, I can see butterflies swooping and floating among the Butterfly Bushes. I think that is really cool.

But these plants will grow in partial shade or partial sun in your yard. The Asters really explode with flowers and color in late summer. In the spring one of the first bloomers after the tulips and crocus are the Irises. This will give you the pleasure of enjoying color and growth early in the year. They are magnificent blooms as they tower over the other perennials in the yard.

Give this design a try. I think you will come to enjoy the Landscape Design for Side Yards. It is easy care with just a little watering during dry periods. The Iris and Asters make great plants to share with family and friends after a few years. The kids will love watching the butterflies around the Butterfly Bushes. You can try to count all the different varieties of butterflies that will be attracted to your little garden.
